They’ve tried these at home remedies and reported on the results so you don’t have to experiment yourself and risk ruining your hair.

Hair Hacks for Moisturizing and Replenishing Hair

1) Moisturizer for the Pool

Since it's summer, you will probably be spending a lot of your free time in the pool. However, next time you are about to take a dip, hop in the shower first! Seems a bit strange to take a shower before getting wet, but if you rub a moisturizing conditioner throughout your hair and leave in it, the chlorinated water won’t soak into your tresses. This will prevent blonde or highlighted hair from turning that ugly murky green color and instead, your hair will be absorbing the nourishing ingredients from the conditioner. Hair will then be moisturized, less tangled and easy to comb once you hop out of the pool too. Nice!

2) Egg Hair Mask

Egg Hair Mask

Eggs have been known for their ability to replenish hair and restore softness and shine. Though the consistency may seem off-putting, crack a few egg whites into a bowl, apply to damp hair and comb through. The eggs whites will make your hair a lot stronger, which will help it grow faster since the ends won’t be breaking off.

3) Mayonnaise Conditioner

Who doesn’t like a good pamper session? If you’ve run out of actual deep conditioner, a fantastic substitute is just steps away in your kitchen. It’s mayonnaise. Massage a generous amount of mayonnaise on your damp hair from mid hair shaft and comb through to the ends. Focus more on the ends as they are oldest part of your hair and can use the extra loving. Let the mayonnaise mask soak into your hair for 20 minutes. We recommend wearing a hair cap to lock in the goodness and keep the mess from getting all over your house. Then wash and style as usual, and the result will be super glossy locks!

4) Aspirin Repair

We all know crushed up aspirin is a common acne treatment but did you know using powdered aspirin in your shampoo can also help your hair? Every two weeks, crush up one aspirin into your regular shampoo routine and lather up. The salicylic acid content in aspirin helps banish dullness from your hair by clearing build up, revealing healthy-looking hair.

Hair Hacks for Frizz and Flyaway Hair

5) Hand Lotion Anti-Frizz Treatment

Frizz is not your friend. If you find your frizz situation getting out of control while on-the-go and you’ve forgotten to pack any anti-frizz product, rub a coin-sized amount of hand lotion into your palms and use it to smooth out and tame frizzy bits and ends in your hair. Use this solution with care and in emergencies, as some of the ingredients in hand lotion might not be suitable for hair on a regular basis. Frizz plagues us all - here are some more tips on handling it.

6) Hair Hack for Pesky Flyaways

Whether your hair is down or styled in an up-do, pesky fly-a-ways are inevitable. A weird trick to make baby hairs lay flat is to spray a toothbrush with hairspray and brush over your hairline. This will keep everything smooth without making your hairstyle crunchy.

7) Dryer Sheets To Get Rid of Static

Whether it’s from a brand new sweater you bought or cold temperatures outside, static hair is no fun. Save yourself the embarrassment by taking care of the situation before you leave the house. Dryer sheets can be very useful in this scenario. You might look a little nuts but, hey, only you and your bathroom mirror will know. Rub the dryer sheets down your hair to get rid of pesky static bits that are standing on edge. Another bonus is the dryer sheet leaves your hair smelling like fresh laundry!

8) DIY Dry Shampoo with Cornstarch

Raise your hand if you’ve ever skipped a wash in the morning only to realize you’ve run out of dry shampoo. What a nightmare! Well, thanks to this hack you can head out the door with fresh looking hair with a little help from your kitchen. If you have lighter coloured hair, massage a little cornstarch into the areas you would generally apply dry shampoo and brush out. For darker hair a mixture of either cornstarch and cocoa powder or arrowroot powder and cocoa powder will do the deed. The cocoa powder will prevent any visible white residue and give you a rich, delicious smelling mane.

9) Overnight Dry Shampoo Trick

Dry shampoo is a godsend, however the white residue left on roots is the only annoying thing about it. A trick to get rid of this unappealing look is to spray dry shampoo into hair the night before and sleep on it. It soaks up the oil overnight and leaves your hair fresh and clean the next morning. By doing this you also save time in the morning by not having to rub the dry shampoo into your roots.

10) Dry Shampoo Alternative

If you run out of your favorite drugstore brand of dry shampoo, a weird at home product you can use instead is baby powder! Pour a little bit onto your hand or brush and gently rub into your scalp at the roots. Just like regular dry shampoo, make sure there’s no excess so you don’t have any white roots. The baby powder will soak up the excess oil and leave your hair fresh which will let you go an extra day without needing to wash your locks.

11) Dandruff Hair Hack

Do you have trouble combating dandruff? An amazing at home product that exfoliates the scalp and prevents dandruff is baking soda! Try it for yourself by mixing 2 tablespoons of baking soda with water to create a fine paste and coat your scalp with it. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes then wash off and it will have worked its magic on your scalp. We love this hack because a healthy scalp means healthy hair!

12) For Your Day 2, 3, or More Hair

We all go a without washing our hair a few too many days in a row. A weird hack to keep hair smelling fresh is to spray your favourite perfume on your brush and comb through your tresses. This will give it an aromatic smell, which will hide the fact you skipped washing it.

Hair Colour Treatment Hacks

13) Kool Aid Neutralizer

We can already sense how many of you 90s kids are going to love this. It’s one of the crazier ones, but we’ve got the intel that it definitely works. How many of you brunettes have left the salon with perfectly ashy hair only to find it turning a gunky brass tone days later? Kyle White, colorist at The Oscar Blandi Salon for over 30 years, suggests that brunettes who find themselves in this type of brassy fix should use grape Kool Aid (yes, Kool Aid) to neutralize those warm tones. Continue to use your purple shampoo as normal and give this trick a go next time you need to nudge your hair in the right direction.

14) Dish Soap to Tone Down Colour

Here’s another kitchen solution ready for double duty. Hair makeovers don’t always go as planned, and it can sometimes cost hundreds of dollars to get them fixed. If you ever find yourself with a colour job that doesn’t suit your fancy or one that simply needs to be stripped down a little, add a drop or two of all-natural dish soap to your regular shampoo. Using a natural product avoids adding any extra harsh chemicals to the mix while helping to dial the intensity of your colour job down by a whopping two to three shades.

15) Tomato Juice For A Blonde Makeover

Multitasking everyday items from the kitchen seems to be a recurring theme when it comes to hair hacks. This one has been tried and tested and still seems just as crazy every single time. If you have blonde hair, chances are you’ve spent a little too much time in a pool or in the ocean and left with a head of green hair - OMG! Rid your blonde hair of those unwanted green tones by soaking your hair in tomato juice. The science side of this hack explains that the red in the tomato juice neutralizes the green and gives your blonde a boost. Leave the juice in for 20 minutes, then shampoo and condition as you would normally. Repeat if necessary. Want to see this trick in action? DIY superstar LaurDIY recently put tomato juice to the test after a vacation in Bora Bora left her with monster green hair.

16) Lemon Juice Highlights

As the seasons change, we all look for ways to incorporate change into our lifestyles. A subtler way to take a leap with hair colour is to use lemon juice as a highlighting product. Apply lemon juice to your hair and comb it through gently to begin the process. All you need to do next is head out onto your balcony or patio for 45 minutes and let the sun and lemon juice get to know each other. Repeat this process every two weeks or so for a gradual lightening of your hair. Stop whenever the intended result has been achieved. We can get down with a hack that puts you in control.

17) Heatless Sock Curls

There’s something about a gorgeous set of curls that gives your look that added oomph. The catch? Curling our hair manually with a wand often takes forever and makes us vulnerable to heat damage. To achieve these heatless curls, start by sectioning off your hair. Next, pick up a section, spritz it with hairspray, twist it, and roll it into the sock until it reaches the top of your head. Finally, tie the sock into a knot and repeat for all remaining sections. You can also follow up with an extra spritz of hairspray after tying up all the sections. Check out Nicole Skye’s quick and easy tutorial to recreate these yourself.

18) Heatless Banana/Toilet Paper Roll Curls

If you love bouncy curls but using a curling iron takes too much time and damages your hair in the process, you can use bananas or toilet paper rolls to curl hair instead! All you have to do is spray your hair with water and roll it around a banana or toilet paper roll. Once your hair has dried, finger comb through the curls to break them up and finish by spraying with a texturizing product.

19) Extra Volume and Texture with Coca-Cola

This may be the strangest hairstyling hack, but surprisingly Coca-Cola gives hair insane volume and texture! Simply pour Coca-Cola over your hair, then wrap your head in a towel to let it dry. You are left with voluminous supermodel hair!

20) Voluminous Hair with Gelatine

Another at home product you can use for added volume is gelatine. Add gelatine to a shampoo infused with thickening agents and it will boost hair’s volume and add lots of luscious body to your locks. Gelatine enhances the shampoo’s thickening ingredients, and you only need about 2 tsp. of unflavoured gelatine mixed with your shampoo to get amazing results.

That brings us to the end of our whacky hair hack roundup. Who would have thought that items like corn starch, cocoa powder, and kool aid could save our hair in times of need? It just goes to show how everyday items from the kitchen and pantry can be put to use in so many different ways. Which weird hair hack did you find the most surprising on our list?
