The Faces Behind Luxy Hair: Istiana, Videographer

Istiana first discovered Luxy Hair's YouTube in high school, one of the first channels she ever came across. Years later, she saw a wanted ad on Instagram for a Videographer, and has worked with the company at various levels and stages to elevate our visual content. In fact, if you check out our recent blog posts or YouTube videos, you will see Istiana first and center. Talk about coming full circle!

I produce, edit, and shoot all of the Luxy Hair YouTube channel content. I also execute campaign videos, video ad content, blog photography, and some social media photos with models. Most of the visual content you see from Luxy Hair (minus campaign photos and product photos) comes from my camera!

What does a typical day at the office or on site look like for you?

I work off-site mostly alternating between shooting content at home, on location for blog shoots, or in studios for campaigns. The rest of the time I’m editing videos at home.

What drew you to videography? Why did you decide to pursue a career in this field?

I accidentally fell into content creation and media production when I started my own YouTube channel in University to share my music online. A studio producer I worked with saw I could shoot and paid me to film some behind-the-scenes videos for his clients. From there I thought, why not do more of this? I started a freelance videography business with my boyfriend which eventually led me to working with Luxy Hair regularly.

I’m a super visual and creative person so shooting, editing, and creating content feels natural for me!

What’s one thing about you no one would guess upon first talking to you?

I’m a pretty quiet and reserved person but I have a lot going on. I run a networking company, am a singer, and have a YouTube channel! I guess the one thing most people never see is my past as a competitive gymnast and cheerleader haha!

What project are you the most proud of?

I’m proud of all of the campaign videos I have worked on with Luxy Hair—our Clip-in Bangs campaign video especially! Outside of Luxy Hair, I am proud of the large-scale events I have curated and put on for young women in Toronto to network and hear from female leaders across industries with my company, Monday Girl!

Which artists or brands do you admire from a videography perspective?

Wes Anderson films and trailers are always a favourite. There aren’t as many female videographers so I try to look for their works and brands like Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, and even Glossier are always pushing the envelope with video content!

Have you found it difficult making the transition from videography for art vs. eCommerce?

The hardest part about doing video for both your artistic passions and eCommerce work is that I’m doing it all day long, all the time. It’s kind of like if you’re looking at Instagram all day long for work, the last thing you want to do is spend more time on Instagram after work. Sometimes I feel that way about Final Cut Pro!

What would a perfect day look like to you?

One where I don’t wake up in a scramble. A relaxing morning with a nice coffee and time to read a few book pages would be lovely. I’d spend a few hours filming and editing a project, go outside for a few hours, spend some time with my dog and boyfriend, call a friend, and have a delicious dinner that I didn’t have to cook!
