Clip-ins, tape-ins, weaves, pre-bonded, fusion, micro-link โ if you're new to the world of hair extensions, the terminology alone can feel overwhelming. The good news? Once you understand how each method works, finding the right fit for your hair type, lifestyle, and budget becomes a whole lot easier.
This guide breaks down every major type of hair extension โ how they're applied, how they're maintained, how long they last, and who each method suits best. And because we believe the best extension is the one that works for your life, we'll call out where Luxy products fit in along the way.

Real Human Hair vs. Synthetic Hair Extensions
Before diving into application methods, there's one foundational choice to make: real human hair or synthetic? This decision affects everything โ how the extensions look, how they behave, what you can do with them, and how long they last.
Human hair extensions are made from real hair collected from donors. Remy human hair โ the gold standard โ means all the cuticles are kept intact and aligned in the same direction, which prevents tangling and keeps the hair smooth and silky over time. All Luxy Hair extensions are 100% Remy human hair.
Synthetic hair extensions are made from fine plastic or blended fibres manufactured to mimic real hair. They're generally cheaper upfront but come with significant trade-offs.
Here's how they compare across the factors that matter most:
Look & Feel
Human hair looks and feels real โ because it is โ and blends naturally with your own hair. Synthetic fibres can feel stiff, wiry, or coarse, and don't move the same way as natural hair, making blending more difficult.
Styling & Colouring
Human hair extensions can be straightened, curled, blow dried, and coloured just like your natural hair. Synthetic extensions cannot be coloured (the chemicals destroy the fibres) and cannot be heat styled โ curling irons, flat irons, and blow dryers will melt or permanently damage them.
Longevity
Synthetic extensions typically last a few months before deteriorating. Human hair extensions, with proper care, can last a year or more. Luxy Remy human hair extensions last around one year on average.
The bottom line: human hair wins on every measure except upfront price. For long-term value, natural look, and styling flexibility, real hair is always the better investment.
1. Clip-In Hair Extensions
Clip-in extensions are wefts of hair attached to a fabric or silicone base with small pressure-sensitive clips. You snap them open, secure them to sections of your natural hair, snap them closed, and you're done. No salon visit, no chemicals, no heat at the roots โ just instant length and volume in 5 to 15 minutes.
Clip-ins are the most beginner-friendly type of hair extension and the least damaging, because the application involves zero adhesive, zero heat at the scalp, and zero permanent attachment. They're also the most versatile โ you can wear them one day and take them out the next, adjusting your look on demand.
Luxy offers three styles of clip-in extensions to suit different hair types and preferences:
Seamless Clip-In Extensions โ our bestseller. The silicone weft lies completely flat against the head for an invisible, comfortable fit โ perfect for fine or thin hair and anyone who wants a seamless blend.
Classic Clip-In Extensions โ a fabric weft with the same 100% Remy human hair. Great for medium to thick hair and a brilliant entry point into extensions.
Haloยฎ Extensions โ a single weft on an invisible wire that sits on your head like a halo, with no clips at all. The easiest install of all โ literally 60 seconds โ and ideal for anyone who wants maximum comfort and zero fuss.
Care & Maintenance
Human hair clip-ins only need washing every 15โ20 wears, or when product buildup makes them feel unmanageable. Brush gently, shampoo and condition, air dry, and store them flat or hanging. They can be curled, straightened, and styled just like your own hair โ just use a lower heat setting and always apply a heat protectant. See our full wash and care guide here.
How Long Do They Last?
With proper care, clip-in extensions typically last 6 months to over a year. Luxy Remy clip-ins average about one year of regular wear. See our care tips to make them last even longer.
Also worth knowing: Luxy's clip-in range extends beyond full sets. If you want to add length to just your fringe, our Clip-In Curtain Bangs let you test a new fringe style instantly. For a polished updo without the effort, our Clip-In Bun adds a full, natural-looking bun in seconds. And for a long, thick ponytail, our Luxy Ponytail Extension wraps around your natural pony for an instant transformation.
2. Tape-In Hair Extensions
Tape-in extensions are pre-taped wefts that are sandwiched on either side of a thin section of your natural hair using heat-activated adhesive. A hairdresser applies them using a heated tool that activates the glue โ the process typically takes 40 minutes to an hour. Removal requires a special glue-removing solution, and the extensions can be re-used if they're in good condition after removal.
Care & Maintenance
The adhesive is the main consideration with tape-ins. Oil-based conditioners, heavy serums, and certain styling products can loosen the tape and cause the wefts to slip โ a common issue. Most hairdressers recommend sulphate-free, lightweight products specifically designed for tape-in extensions. You can style them freely since they're human hair, but always be cautious around the root area where the tape sits.
How Long Do They Last?
Tape-ins are semi-permanent and typically need to be removed and reapplied every 4โ8 weeks as your natural hair grows.
3. Sew-In Hair Extensions / Weave
Weave extensions are sewn directly into your hair using a needle and thread. First, the natural hair is braided into cornrows close to the scalp, then the weft is sewn into those braids row by row. The process is lengthy โ often several hours โ and must be done by an experienced stylist. Sew-ins also come in wig form, where the entire piece is sewn onto cornrows as a single unit.
This method works best for those with thicker, stronger hair. The tight application puts tension on the scalp, which can feel heavy or uncomfortable โ particularly for those with finer hair. When done well, however, it creates one of the most seamless and long-lasting results of any extension method.
Care & Maintenance
Scalp care is essential with weaves. Moisturize the scalp, nape, and edges at least once a week, and use deep conditioning treatments regularly. A protein-based wash helps minimise damage and keep the hair strong throughout the wear.
How Long Do They Last?
It's recommended to remove a weave every 6โ8 weeks, particularly if you're trying to maintain the health and growth of your natural hair. The maximum wear time is around 4 months.
4. Fusion & Pre-Bonded Hair Extensions
Fusion extensions โ also called bonded or pre-bonded extensions โ are attached to individual strands of natural hair using a keratin-based adhesive. The application uses either a heat clamp or a tool similar to a hot glue gun to melt the bonding material onto small sections of natural hair. Application takes 3โ4 hours and must be done by a professional stylist.
This method offers a very natural, blended result since the extensions are attached strand by strand โ but the use of heat and adhesive directly at the root makes it the most potentially damaging method on this list. Some hairdressers will advise against it depending on the condition and thickness of your natural hair.
Care & Maintenance
You can use your regular hair products, but the bonds need to be repositioned every 2โ3 months as your natural hair grows and the bonds move away from the scalp. The chemicals in the adhesive can cause hair loss, breakage, and scalp irritation over time if not managed carefully.
How Long Do They Last?
Fusion extensions are semi-permanent and typically last up to 4 months, depending on hair type and growth rate.
5. Microlink Hair Extensions
Microlink extensions โ also called micro bead or micro loop extensions โ attach small wefts of hair to individual sections of natural hair using tiny silicone-lined beads. A special clamping tool squeezes the bead shut to hold it in place. No glue, no heat at the scalp โ but installation still takes 2โ4 hours and should be done by a professional.
When applied correctly, microlinks are one of the gentler semi-permanent methods. The risk comes from improper installation โ beads clamped too tightly create pressure and pulling at the roots, which can lead to damage or hair loss over time.
Care & Maintenance
Microlinks can be washed and styled like your natural hair. Like fusion extensions, they need repositioning every 2โ3 months as the natural hair grows and the beads shift away from the scalp.
How Long Do They Last?
Microlink extensions are semi-permanent and generally last up to 4 months.
6. Wigs & Hair Pieces
Wigs are full head coverings โ they sit over your entire natural hair and can be used for anything from hair loss to dramatic style changes. Lace front wigs and net-based wigs refer to different construction methods that affect how natural the hairline looks. Full wigs come in both human hair and synthetic versions, with all the same trade-offs we covered at the top of this guide.
Hair pieces are smaller and more targeted โ designed to add volume or length to a specific area, or to create a specific style. Luxy's Ponytail Extension and Clip-In Bun both fall into this category โ they're quick, damage-free hair pieces made from 100% Remy human hair that blend seamlessly with your natural hair. Our Hair Topper is specifically designed to add coverage and volume at the crown for those experiencing thinning โ a targeted solution that works with your existing hair rather than over it.
Care & Maintenance
Washing full wigs requires care โ since the hair is attached to a base material, you need to adapt your wash routine to avoid damaging the cap. For hair pieces like clip-in buns and ponytails, care is the same as any human hair clip-in. See our guide to the best products for hair extensions here.
How Long Do They Last?
Human hair wigs can last up to a year with good care. Synthetic hair pieces typically last one to a few months. Luxy human hair pieces โ Ponytails, Buns, Hair Toppers โ last around a year with proper maintenance.
