Ask Luxy

If you wrote in last time, your question just may have made the cut. If not, be sure to follow us on Instagram at @luxyhair to get in on the next round. Either way, we’ve got some great advice we know you’ll love. Best of all, our experts have not only seen and heard it all when it comes to hair, they’ve also dealt with these hair troubles themselves, and can tell you—from experience—what really works and what doesn’t.

This week we’re looking at everything from the right way to wash your Luxy Hair extensions to controlling flyaways. Can you relate? Read on to get the scoop.

How often should I wash my Luxies and what is the best way to do so without causing damage?

Since your Luxy Hair extensions are made from 100% real human hair, they can be washed just like your own hair, however, it’s best to be gentle as the hair has been color-treated. I suggest filling up your bathroom sink with some lukewarm water and a tiny bit of shampoo and gently brushing through any tangles before you get washing. Alcohol and sulfate free products that are designed for colored hair or hair extensions are your safest bet.

Also, keep in mind that unlike your regular hair which gets oily and therefore needs to be washed more often, your Luxies can typically go 15 to 20 wears without being washed. When there is major product build-up to the point where the hair becomes unmanageable, it’s a pretty good sign your Luxies are due for a shampoo.

How do you fix/prevent breakage?

Hair breakage is a problem most of us deal with at some time or another. I love trying out the latest hair colors (as a matter of fact, I have neon pink hair right now), and I’ve created fair amount of hair damage and breakage in the process.
Unfortunately, when it comes to hair breakage, there’s no actual remedy—you can’t mend broken strands of hair and there is no magic glue to repair split ends. However, these are some tricks I’ve learned along the way to make my hair look smoother and healthier, while making breakage seem less apparent.

Use a good, all-natural conditioning treatment after you shampoo your hair and leave it in for at least 5 minutes so the product can really soak into your hair

Apply a hair oil after styling—it helps calm frizz, giving you a sleeker look whether you’re wearing your hair up or down. Using anti-frizz serum before and after styling is also a good way to minimize the appearance of breakage.

How do you air dry your hair without frizz?

After years of fussing with a curling iron or straightener, I decided enough is enough! I dedicated myself to learning how I could leave my hair to air-dry without the frizz so I could stop heat styling once and for all. From salon frizz-reducing treatments to sleeping with a braid, I’ve experimented with it all, and after lots of trial and error, I can confidently say that I think I’ve managed to embrace my naturally wavy hair while keeping the frizz at bay (okay, when the humidity hits you never know what’s going to happen!)

Everyone is different, so it’s a good idea to try out a few different air-drying techniques before you settle on a go-to. Keep in mind that while your hair may seem especially frizzy and unmanageable when you first forgo the heat, if you can stick it out, it will get better over time since heat styling tends to perpetuate an endless cycle of frizz and damage.

I prefer to wash my hair at night, leaving the conditioner to soak in for at least 5 minutes. After the shower, I apply a medley of products—my hair is pretty thick, so it can handle this, but if your hair is on the thinner side or tends to get oily relatively quickly, you may want to opt for a less is more approach. The most important tip when you get out of the shower, is to not brush your hair. That’s right, don’t do it! You’ll want to brush out those tangles, but resist the urge as this actually breaks up the curls, resulting in a mess of frizz rather than crisp, defined waves. Then, I’ll spray on some leave-in conditioner, some curl-enhancing mousse, and finally a hydrating hair oil to help control frizz. Once my hair is dry, I’m off to sleep (going to bed with wet hair is not a good look for me in the morning). When I wake up, I just touch up a few face framing pieces of my hair with a straightener to polish things up, but of course, this step is completely optional. I’d suggest trying out my technique as a stepping stone, but feel free to tweak it and see what works best for you.

If your hair isn’t as naturally wavy as mine and you think you need some extra help getting some definition, check out these creative heatless curls tutorials.

How do I tame flyaways and stray hairs?

Ask Luxy

A few years ago, I had a sudden and unshakeable urge to dye my naturally very dark hair blonde. Yes, blonde! What prompted this? I’m not sure. I think I wanted a change, but I was forced to dye it back to my natural color when I noticed my hair was becoming progressively more damaged with each bleaching session.

Although my hair has come a long way since then (all thanks to the all-natural shampoos, hair repairing conditioners, and nourishing treatment masks I’ve been using), I still deal with flyaways as a result of the breakage my hair incurred during my blonde stage. The pesky strands tend to spring up at the worst times, like when I want to rock a sleek, straight look, for example, but luckily I’ve discovered some relatively easy quick fixes to tame those stray hairs.

My favorite tip is to spray a little bit of hairspray on a toothbrush (not the same one you use for your teeth, of course) and simply brush down any flyaways. For me, they are mostly concentrated around my hairline and at the crown of my head. If it’s a slick back ponytail you’re after, a little bit of gel or pomade should do the trick—don’t use too much, otherwise you risk your hair having a crunchy feeling. I also find that using a leave-in conditioner post-shower can help smooth the hair and reduce frizz and flyaways before you even start styling your hair. Finally, a little bit of hair oil to smooth down those strays is an easy-peasy way to keep your hair looking sleek and frizz-free.

What type of extensions are best for fine hair?

If you’re a newbie to hair extensions, then you probably didn’t even know that they come in varying thicknesses. While our Seamless Collection is offered in a standard weight of 180g, our Classic Collection is offered in 120g, 160g, and 220g sets, so it’s important to choose the right one for you. We know what you’re thinking: if you have thin hair you probably need heavier weight extensions, right? Wrong!

Many people have the misconception that if you have fine hair, then you’ll need a thicker set, like the 220g. However, it’s actually the opposite. Simply put, for thin hair, the 120g set is sufficient, for regular, medium-thickness hair the 160g set is recommended, and for thick or short hair, the 220g set is your match. This ensures that your hair is full throughout, giving you a seamless, blended look, rather than your hair looking especially full and voluminous at the top, but your ends looking thin and scraggly.

Our Seamless Collection is also great for those with fine hair as they are 50% thinner at the base of the wefts compared to our Classics Collection. If you are contemplating going the Seamless route but are worried they will be too heavy, we suggest opting for a heavier set and having a little extra hair rather than opting for a lighter set and not having enough hair because you can always take out a few wefts to lighten up the weight.
