It's the most wonderful time of the year...festival season! With Coachella just around the corner, and music festivals happening all through the summer, music festivals are the perfect time to experiment with hairstyles that wouldn't necessarily function in the real world.
So...what are the elements for perfect festival hair?
1. It's got to be unique - music festivals are not the time to be shy! 2. It has to be functional - remember, you're going to be spending all day out in the hot sun, and all night dancing. 3. It's got to make you feel confident and comfortable - no one wants to spend all day thinking about how their looks while their favourite bands rock out on stage.
Fellow music festival lovers, we've got you covered! Read on for a list of our top 10 favourite hairstyles that are spectacular for music festivals this year, and have the potential for you to end up in those coveted Coachella fashion blogs.
Double Dutch Braids
We've been obsessed with Double Dutch Braids ever since they burst onto the hairstyle scene last year. This braid hairstyle is perfect for music festivals because not only is it functional, staying put while you dance during hot, dry, and dusty conditions, but it looks super chic too. Also, here's a little hair hack: if you sleep with the braids in, you'll have beautiful, boho waves in the morning...perfect for the next day of the festival!
Here's a tutorial on how to create Double Dutch Braids, using hair extensions to make those braids thicker and longer. For a twist on this hairstyle, try only braiding your hair till the nape of your neck and tying your hair into two low ponytails, or create 3 or 4 dutch braids instead of two!
Not only is this new trend totally awesome for hiding roots that are growing in, it's a super fun way to take your festival hairstyle to the next level. To get this look, mix your favourite glitter with hair gel, and apply to your roots with a brush. We love the idea of using glitter with fun shapes or adding in a retro zig-zag part or some braids to accentuate your new sparkly 'do. Full disclosure, this hair idea isn't exactly mess-free, and washing it off may or may not leave glitter all over your bathtub. We also definitely recommend to wash your hair before going to bed.
90s fashion has made a full comeback (think crop tops, chokers, platform shoes) so it's only fitting that Baby Spice's iconic double buns, now re-popularized by Miley Cyrus as Space Buns, make their own comeback as well. This hairstyle is a bit kooky for everyday, but perfect for festivals, where festival fashion takes on a mind of its own. You can either wear all or half your hair up, add dutch braids, a fun zig-zag part, or glitter at the roots as shown above.
Middle Part Braid
Adding an unexpected braid is always a great way to spice up any hairstyle. Don't feel like going all out with hair extensions or glitter? Only have 10 minutes at camp to do your hair before your favourite DJ is on? No problem! To create this look, section off 2 inches of hair down the middle with a rat tail comb. Apply a bit of hair wax to ensure that the hair doesn't fly away or come undone as you're braiding it. Then, just French or Dutch braid the hair back. Be sure to keep pulling each section tightly as you braid to achieve this sharp look. Bonus points if you add glitter. Here's another version of the middle part braid, with the hair braided forward and turned into a headband.
We love this hairstyle for Coachella or any other festival this summer! It's functional, adorable, and takes a boring old ponytail to the next level. To get the look, tie your hair into a ponytail, then fishtail braid the ponytail. Secure with an elastic band, and pull sections of the braid loose, to fluff up the braid. You can even add a few flowers through the braid for that super hippie chic vibe, or add hair extensions for added length and volume to the braid.
Viking Braids (for her)
We all know Vikings were known for being warriors, but many tales of lore show Viking men and women with elaborate braids and hairstyles that we just love. A huge hair trend inspired by Vikings this festival season is braids on braids on braids. Fishtail braids, mixed with Dutch braids, mixed with cornrow braids, middle part braids, three strand braids, French braids...the list goes on! Here's a cool, edgy way to make sure you stand out in a crowd at Coachella. This easy hairstyle is also ideal for camping festivals where you don't have access to a shower everyday, since it embraces that messy, gritty look. Perfect for day three hair!

Beautiful Boho, Beachy Waves
You can't really go wrong with beautiful, bohemian inspired waves that are just the right amount of messy. They give off that cool, effortless "I woke up like this" vibe while looking totally chic. Boho waves are pretty much essential for festivals like Coachella, where everyone looks like they just time travelled from the 60s. To create this look, curl your hair in piece-y sections, and scrunch the curls as they cool to ensure that they don't set too neatly. Boho waves look best when full and long, so we definitely recommend to add hair extensions for instant length and volume, as shown in this tutorial. Pair this festival hairstyle with a flower crown, cool hat, or a pretty crochet dress.
Just like the Fishtail Ponytail above, this is a unique twist on a regular ponytail, but practical enough for hot, sunny days spent outside dancing till you drop. In the tutorial video below, Alex uses her 220g Ash Blonde Luxy Hair extensions to give her pull-through braid epic length and volume. Again, this braid hairstyle is perfect for camping music festivals like Coachella, where you likely won't have access to hot hair styling tools.
Boho Fishtail Pigtails
This braid hairstyle idea is sweet with just the right amount of edge. We just love that intentionally messy look, achieved by pulling sections up and down each braid. You can even string some flowers through each braid, wear a flower crown, headscarf, or hat. Fishtail braids are a totally versatile, yet practical hairstyle idea for music festivals. The best part? Sleep with these in, and impress your festival fam the next morning with gorgeous, beachy waves.
Don't forget to accessorize!
Music festivals are the perfect place to go nuts with hair accessories. While we love flower crowns as much as the next person, there is so much more out there in the hair accessory department! Try adding hair charms to your braids for an edgy way to spice up your look, or weave pieces of leather or coloured yarn through your hair. How about wearing a head scarf or weaving fresh flowers in your hair? Seriously, y'all, we encourage you to get creative and go nuts!
