As Social Media Coordinator, I handle all aspects of Luxy Hair's social media presence including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest and TikTok. Needless to say, it’s so fun and always changing. My role consists of scheduling posts, gathering content from our customers and affiliates, planning stories, filming content, planning partnerships and giveaways, and more! Everyday is different, and it definitely keeps me on my toes.
What does a typical day at the office look like for you?
Every day is a little different...but first things first, I make a coffee! Then I settle in at my desk, the kitchen table, or a cozy couches to start getting some work done. First thing in the morning I typically check in on the scheduled content for the day (Instagram and Facebook) to make sure the captions are done, and the post is good to go. This is when I make any final changes if necessary. Then, I take a look at my to-do list and start crossing things off. Some examples of this might be to plan stories for an upcoming campaign, work with our affiliate manager to secure an influencer takeover, or posting the latest blog content on Pinterest. In the afternoon I like to do any filming that needs to be done, brainstorming for upcoming initiatives and content, and getting back to any more emails. Afternoon is peak creative time for me!
What drew you to social media? Why did you decide to pursue a career in this field?
To me, social media is like a visual journal. I’ve always loved being creative, writing, creating mood boards, and digital marketing. I think social media is the perfect marriage of all those things. I was drawn to the fast-paced, always evolving social media world and decided to pursue a career in this field because it’s so fun! I am a beauty and hair junkie, and follow so many brands, and I always felt jealous of the people behind the accounts. I thought it must be so fun to plan out a feed, write captions, film stories, post on Pinterest, and talk to consumers. And now that’s exactly what I do!
What are your top 3 favourite social media accounts?
Right now I’m loving @matildadjerf, @mejuri and @intothegloss. Oh and obviously @luxyhair ;)
Do you have a favourite brand you admire from a social media perspective?
I really love the social media presence of Kosas. Their content is always so clean, cool, and engaging. Their aesthetic and brand voice is really clear and aligned with who they are. Plus their products are to die for!
How many TikTok dances do you know?
You’d be shocked to know that I don’t know ANY right now. I swear when I learn them they disappear from my brain within hours. So...ya.
What’s one thing about you no one would guess upon first talking to you?
Hmm.. probably that I am obsessed with classic rock. Seriously, my favourite bands of all time are the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and The Rolling Stones.
How do you consistently come up with engaging content? Do you ever feel like you’ve run out of ideas? How do combat that?
I draw inspiration from everywhere around me! Of course I keep a close eye on social media trends, but I also draw inspiration from fashion trends, beauty trends, what’s big on tv, the latest book everyone is reading, current events, and more. I use inspiration from all these things to help me come up with content ideas. I also ask myself and my friends “what are you loving right now?” or “what would you engage with on social media?” There are definitely times when I feel a social media version of “writer’s block.” When that feeling hits, I like to go for a walk and get off of technology for a couple hours. Usually when I return with a fresh set of eyes, something will come to me.
What advice do you have for young people wanting to get into a similar field?
I suggest getting experience from a local small business! Reach out and see if they might need part time help running their social media accounts. This is a great way to get your foot in the door, support local, and make some extra money on the side of whatever else you might be doing. If you’re really serious about a career in a similar field, I also recommend checking out college programs (online or in-class)! There are so many great 1 or 2 year programs available in fields like digital marketing, beauty marketing, social media, and more. I attended Humber College for Cosmetic Management, and it really helped me discover my strengths and learn more about this field.
